David A. Stone, M.D. Memorial Scholarship

David Stone, M.D. came to work with Hartwell Family Practice in 1984. With him he brought his own special approach to treating patients. He was a straight forward, no sugar coating doctor who firmly believed laughter is the best medicine. He utilized character ears to make children laugh as he knew they were afraid because they didn’t understand what was happening. As best stated by David Seagraves, CEO of Ty Cobb Regional Medical Center, “He has demonstrated an enduring commitment to addressing the physical needs of his patients while providing encouragement and wise council along the way.”

Being a physician was Dr. Stone’s choice of professions but it was such a small part of who he was as a person. He loved people but more than that, he loved helping people. For many years, Dr. Stone provided volunteer medical care to citizens of impoverished nations around the world with the organization Doctors Without Borders and constructed numerous homes while serving as a volunteer with Hart County Habitat for Humanity.

Dr. Stone left us in June of 2015 after a gallant yet heartbreaking fight against ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) known to many as Lou Gerhrig’s Disease. Not only was this a huge loss to the medical profession, it was an enormous loss to Hart County and surrounding communities. “I know [David] left the world a better place than he found it through the commitment and service that he gave others.” -C. Jay Moss, III, Physical Therapist.
